Hello, I will be having a trip from Europe to Los Angeles soon and I was wondering if the duty free shops in LAX include the sales tax in their prices. I have researched a lot about the sales tax schema in the US (as opposed to the classical European VAT) and I can't seem to find any answer if I can actually avoid the sales tax by purchasing goods on my way back to Europe at LAX's duty free.

    3. Re: tax refund in California. 12 years ago. The US government does not have a “national sales tax” or VAT. Most websites don't charge California sales tax (although that may be changing soon since our state is B.R.O.K.E.) Also, if you are traveling to Las Vegas, sales tax there is only around 7%, which can make a difference on large purchases.

Re: Shopping in USA - TAX. 13 years ago. No you don't need a calculator, you're not the one adding the tax, it's figured for you. And, a $10 drink would be $10.98 in Santa Monica, not $12.90. However, if you're buying the drink in a bar, there's no tax. It's a straight $10. If you buy food, though, you are charged tax.
