    The fastest and most direct route is to take 95S, 295, then 64E. When there is little to no traffic (you'd have to leave Washington between 10am and 12 noon - weekeday - for the best window) you should be able to make it to Williamsburg in 2 or 2.5 hours.

    Re: Route Planner. Old school paper maps and atlases are a good place to start in planning a road trip. They help to provide the big picture and show how your destinations relate to each other. Plot your route on a paper map and then put it in to an online program like GoogleMaps for approximate drive times/distances.

We have driven all 3 ways, and have found the best, (and most scenic), is the route suggested by mapquest. I-55 to I-155 to Dyersburg, TN, US-412, TN-20E, US-45S, AL-158E, I-65S, I-165S, I-10E, AL-59S to Gulf Shores.
