As far as I can tell, Waze, Google, Mapquest, and many others have eliminated the ability to map driving directions using the shortest driving miles rather than driving time. Since, I never drive fast and hate patronizing interstates as much as root canal surgery, is there any free way to determine the shortest driving miles for a roadtrip?

Have checked both Mapquest and Google Maps with a simple, straightforward search for driving directions from Columbus, OH to Bar Harbor, ME (nearest large town near Acadia National Park). Neither of them routed me through Canada.
