National and Hertz are our "go-to" rental car agencies in Hawaii because my DH has status with both, and usually have enough points for free days/upgrades. Definitely sign up for their loyalty program. 2nd driver/spouse are added at no additional charge.
For this trip I booked an intermediate car with Costco for budget back in Jan. I played the watch game to rebook at a lower rate. I was delighted when our 11 day rental dropped to $350 the week prior to departure. ----only to have hubby say cancel, I prefer National bec he too is Emerald member We paid approx $100 more but we took a SUV from Executive aisle and drove right off.
Answer 1 of 25: Well , I broke down and booked 15 days at $12.50 day . $450 total. It’s what we’re comfortable with and DHCR is still over $900 arriving in 14 days .

This thread prompted me to get on the National site to check the price for our 2 weeks rental during Christmas. It was $1176 total for a full size, while DHCR, autoslash, Hotwire are all over $2000. Even Costco went from $1400 2 days ago to $2000. Thank you for this great tip.
