I'm sketching a 8-9 day drive itinerary that so far includes DEN-Oray-Cortez-Pagosa Springs, with help from numerous recent posts here- thanks folks!Now need a recommended route back to DEN hopefully scenic, or a hike or with an overnight stay about half-way (4 hrs Pagosa Spgs to DEN is a bit of a drive for us that late in the trip).
Great Sand Dunes adds about 90 minutes to the trip on the 285 route. Only about 15 minutes on the Walsenberg route. Five hours drive time is a good estimate from central Denver to Pagosa Springs. We've done this drive multiple times, though we're on the west side which saves about 15 minutes.

Then go back to pickup US285 heading north. You can take 285 all the way to Denver. We like the drive through the high plateau of South Park on US24 then on past Pike's Peak to Colorado Springs then north on I-25. Various other options along this route. Have fun.
We have some mountain driving experience but it looks more twisty and steep than we have done before. Seemed like that would be a nice halfway point and beautiful. If we skip Aspen only due to the challenge of driving into it and still go up 24 instead of 285 is that a good option or is 285 better scenery.
1. Re: Best route to Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The most scenic and historic route would be both! I25 to US160 - Trinidad is a historic town, with a cute downtown. Then west on US160 you see lots of high mountains, a fort at Fort Garland, Alamosa (and a side trip to Great Sand Dunes NP), then Wolf Creek Pass.
1. Re: Best route from I-40. 8 years ago. Yes, there are no 4 lane highways to Pagosa from I40. You could continue on I40 to Abq, then north on I25 to Bernalillo then US550 to Durango then east on US 160 to Pagosa, but that will take hours longer! Get used to driving those roads. Report inappropriate content.
2. Re: Denver to Pagosa Springs. 15 years ago. Another route, is to take US285 sw from Denver toward Buena Vista and then south to Great Sand Dunes. This is a beautiful and quicker drive. From Sand Dunes, head west on US160 over Wolf Creek Pass to Pagosa. 5.5 hours of driving without stops. This is the route Google Maps will give you.
