It is usually a bad idea to use a debit card for car rental because of the hold that the rental car companies will put on your money. You can ask how much of a hold they'll require ahead of time but it is normal business practice for that to occur. Hotels will also place a hold on your money when using a debit card. Great post, but no one answered the original question. Does anyone have personal experience with a rental company that accepts debit cards. This is only one example, another example is someone who has bad credit or a bankruptcy and can't get a credit card but still needs to travel and rent a car and has a debit card and plenty of money on it.
Yes, do check the website of the above car rental companies to see what their policies were. A few years ago, I attempted to rent a car with a debit card and was told that I needed to provide a copy of my most recent paystub to prove that I had a job!
