Great post, but no one answered the original question. Does anyone have personal experience with a rental company that accepts debit cards. This is only one example, another example is someone who has bad credit or a bankruptcy and can't get a credit card but still needs to travel and rent a car and has a debit card and plenty of money on it.
It is usually a bad idea to use a debit card for car rental because of the hold that the rental car companies will put on your money. You can ask how much of a hold they'll require ahead of time but it is normal business practice for that to occur. Hotels will also place a hold on your money when using a debit card. Some rental car branches will run your credit before accepting a debit card - and you will have to have a certain minimum credit rating before they will accept (varies from company to company). I'd check on this.
I use a debit card to rent from Enterprise. In addition to the rental charges, they charge another $200 deposit. It's quickly refunded when I return the car.One time, the cost if a gallon of gas was deducted because I didn't bring the car back full.
