Incidentals on the street (a bottle of water for instance) and tips are pretty much it. At home, I noticed lately that i spend less than $100 a month in cash.
1. Re: Cash versus Credit Cards. 10 years ago. Credit cards are accepted most everywhere. So restaurants, stores, resorts , grocery stores, etc all take credit cards. Taxis may but most do not take credit cards. You should also check with your bank as many banks are part of major banking systems so the ATM fees are not an issue.
Short answer (in order of preference): (1) Use ATM card to get pesos from ATM to use as tips. Be sure to get small change, i.e. 10 peso coins, 20-50 peso bills as service industry workers never seem to have change. (2) Exchange your $$ at a bank after you arrive, (3) Use credit cards at restaurants and shops.
