Straight 95 is the shortest, but the traffic can be awful. Option 2 is to take the Garden State Parkway up to I-287 and cross the Tappan Zee bridge north of the city, reconnecting to 95 near the Connecticut border. Coming from Maryland, though, you might want to consider I-81 to I-84 and avoid the metropolitan area entirely.
Re: Driving from Texas to NYC this Christmas. 19 years ago. If you are staying in Nashville take I-40 N to I-81 N. I-81 will take you to I-78 in Pa. At this point you are about 1 hr. from the NJ border. Take I-78 across NJ, then take NJ TPK north to NJ route# 3 east for Lincoln Tunnel.

If you leave early, you will hit rush hour traffic, leaving later you will hit normal NYC traffic, so, IMO, leave to arrive when you can check in mid afternoon.
