I can recommend the Great Southern Hotel also. It's a big old fashioned hotel, but rooms are clean and comfortable, with modern enough bathrooms.

Otherwise, road trip by a regular car would be one to be considered. There are a lot of local hotels and ryokans with free car park in rural Kyushu.
