Brit passport holders can apply for a sub-class 651 eVisitor visa or a sub-class 601 ETA. The Australian government website used to state that the eVisitor visa was preferred. It possibly still does, but I can't find it. Anyway, as has been said, the 651 eVisitor visa is free, while the ETA is $20.
