Hi Everyone, I am trying to rent a car while visiting the UK but I am having a difficult time with this problem.. I am British but I currently live abroad. I am bringing my wife and her family back with me to the UK for a trip, and after I couple of days in London I was hoping to show them around the rest of the UK with a rental car.
Glina ~ I think you should call the rental car companies, because I know of no companies that rent without a credit card. I truly don't think you can use a debit card or give a deposit. A credit card is bit more security for them when renting out an expensive car. I'm pretty sure you can't "leave cash or travel check".
2. Re: No Credit Card ! 14 years ago. Cash is widely accepted. Traveller's Cheques aren't, but you can exchanghe them at banks (or at Am Ex offices if issued by them). If you get a pre-pay card, make sure it is a MasterCard or Visa one, otherwise you might find yourself unable to use it at some shops and restaurants.

I declined the insurance because I spoke to my Capital One rep (I used one credit card for my England trip) and they said that insurance for oversees car rentals was included. I printed out the benefits guide online to have in case I got questioned and I was glad to have that with me because we got a flat tire (tyre..in England).
Check with your credit card company as to whether any such insurances are bundled free with your card. As other posters have (not always politely) pointed out, Westminster is in central London so a car would be a hindrance here.
