8 years ago. Yes, you'd best get an IDP. You can get one at any AAA office. It's the law in Italy, and the last4 times we've rented a car in Italy, the car rental agency has asked to see our IDP. After booking a rental car a several weeks ago for Sao Miguel through Discover Cars, we just got a notice that the local agency - Ilha Verde - requires an international drivers license, although the rental agreement states that an international drivers license is not required for citizens of the US, EU and UK (we are from the States).

12 years ago. I just rented a car at Avis in Frankfurt and NO you do not need the International Driver Permit, they never asked for it they just ask for your US Drivers License -. By the way AAA only charges $15.00 for the permit. Report inappropriate content. abalada.
You can get the international driver's permit at your local AAA office. It does not replace your driver;s license - you need them both. I rented a car this summer in Italy and they did not ask for it - but if the authorities ask for it - you need it. The fines are steep - so pay the $15 or so at AAA and have one less worry.
The car rental company may or may not ask to see if. If you are stopped by the police for any kind of driving problem, they will certainly demand it. If you do not have one (or a licence issued in the EU), you will be regarded as an unlicenced driver: you will get a big fine, and all insurance on the rental car will be void.
If you had a US driver's license you could apply by mail to AAA and have the IDP FedExed to you overseas. I don't believe the CAA does this, but you could check. If you are resident in an EU country you could apply for a driver's license there, and then wouldn't need an IDP.
