I got lucky and was upgraded to a BMW with an in-dash GPS, so I used that about 90% of the time. I did use Google Maps to search for places to go, get directions while on foot, etc. I had downloaded the entire island of Ireland to my phone before leaving, so that likely saved a ton of cellular data. The downloaded maps take up 430 MB of memory.
There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.

1. Re: best route from Los angeles to Las Vegas. 18 years ago. Take the Lancaster route. With the Lancaster route you won't hit any real traffic. At the most you may have some slight slowing at a couple interchanges but that's it. I drive to Vegas 2-3 times per year and I travel via the Palmdale route.
