Made a reservation online to pick up a car at one location, and return it at a different location a week later. Entered all the dates, times, and credit card info.

   Hotwire car rental is such a scam!!! I booked car online on September 30th and I got HOT RATE for it. When I went to rent a car agency ( Ace ) they told me that there is mile limitation for my reservation ( 150 miles a day ) and that I should cancel reservation because if I go further that 450 miles in 3 days I will pay 25 cents per extra mile.

   Joyce, For future reference there is a thread on trip advisor with car rental tips. Hopefully using some of these techniques you can find a decent price on future rentals without having to go through Hotwire and risk getting a 3rd rate company.

   13 years ago. Save. I have used Hotwire for cars a few times. Never had a problem and it's always been a big name car rental agency. Budget and Hertz are two I can remember, but they use about five of the bigger name agencies. I've gotten good deals with them, too. (it was not in San Francisco, but still the same process & company)
