As ccgs2018 states in post #1, check with Amex for the card benefits. I use the Total Rewards Visa when visiting CET properties and the MLife Master Card in MGM properties. I also use a Gold Amex card tied to Delta Airlines. Check with Amex for the benefits on your card.
Through my Amex card I got "President's Circle" status at Hertz. But I don't have much experience as a Hertz customer. I'm trying to decide between Hertz and Alamo. On rentcars.com I got a very good deal with Alamo for a Full Size SUV. On there Hertz website I got a Minivan reservation for a little bit less than the deal with Alamo.

Finally, I did use my Amex Platinum card to book, and I also have 5 Star status with Hertz, plus this was my very first car rental with them or anyone else. Perhaps some combination of asking for leniency, and/or getting Amex involved here might help me avoid these fees. If anyone has thoughts on navigating this, I'd appreciate it.

That said, if relying on credit car cover, do recheck the terms — and note that some bank cards have dropped coverage in the last 2 years. Report inappropriate content.
