Finally, I did use my Amex Platinum card to book, and I also have 5 Star status with Hertz, plus this was my very first car rental with them or anyone else. Perhaps some combination of asking for leniency, and/or getting Amex involved here might help me avoid these fees. If anyone has thoughts on navigating this, I'd appreciate it.

When signing up you can request they mail you the insurance information. Take this with you. I've rented numerous times and none of the companies I've used have asked for proof.

Amex platinum also gives you lounge access using Priority Pass so that’s useful. Otherwise you just have your usual points accumulation. I haven’t found any extra stuff except at sporting events where there may sometimes be an Amex pavilion. This is probably more than you wanted to know but may be helpful to someone.
