United bumped my daughter from a Thanksgiving week flight due to overbooking and promised to mail a refund check to me (the purchaser). The first week of December they told her it was in the mail. One month later, it's still not here. I went online to the refund page but when I put in her ticket number it came up "not found."

Air Passenger Duty is payable by the airline to HMRC in respect of passengers actually carried at the rate applying to the flight actually taken. If you cancel and thus are not carried then no APD is payable by the airline in respect of the cancelled booking.

When a flight is overbooked, UA (and most airlines in the USA) will begin making offers for pax to be voluntarily bumped. Sometimes, as boarding draws neigh, they up the ante. I also find United to be unsatisfactory with refunds. Example with United-book flight, cancel withing the free period of 24 hours. They say they will "investigate" the refund and let me know. Takes about 10 days. Compare that with AC-cancel within 24 hours and the refund is immediate and confirmation of it is immediate.
I have never flown United before but on other airlines they have held connections for up to 30 minutes especially for international flights. Aparantly not so with United. First thing I do is call the united number for help as I am running to the gate to see if the board was correct in the flight has already departed.
