1 year ago. Google maps cannot be downloaded outside of Japan. The reason for not being able to download offline maps of Japan on Google Maps is because Zenrin Co. (a Japanese mapping company) own the rights to the entire Japan cartographic area, and unlike most other countries, won't give it up to Google Maps for offline use.
7 years ago. Google maps was my saviour in Tokyo! Very reliable and accurate. If looking for travel directions on the underground, it will give you all different options and how much it will cost for each option. I dont know how I would have found my way around without it.
The maps are usually labeled in local language unless it is a major place or attraction/major company/or someone has taken the time to add a translation. Otherwise local places/offices etc are often labeled in Japanese (so are signs in the real location etc). Googlemaps maynot be the best if you are looking for a list of restaurants in English.

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) published a "Tourist Map of Japan" for free distribution. It shows roads and railroads. All cities are shown in English; only larger city names are also shown in Japanese.
Japanese maps. The earliest known term used for maps in Japan is believed to be kata ( 形, roughly "form"), which was probably in use until roughly the 8th century. During the Nara period, the term zu ( 図) came into use, but the term most widely used and associated with maps in pre-modern Japan is ezu ( 絵図, roughly "picture diagram").
6 years ago. It is easy enough to use Google maps in Japan. But much better is to grab a variety of maps when you land at any international airport and at the tourism office of every main train station. They include some fun ads, too. I like paper maps.
