I book my own travel and only have gotten AAA discounts in the USA at large chain hotels. When I go to Europe I use smaller local hotels or B&Bs to get more of the local flavor.

   As for AAA membership the discounts you get on hotels usually covers your membership if you travel enough. Usually $5-$10 savings per night.    A AAA member fir over 20 yrs.... The membership is worth it. The maps are free so if you are traveling that is $20 or more in maps and guide books. On top of it you get. AAA rate for hotels which is about a 10% discount on hotels. You also get AAA service from travel agents.
