The upward grade on I-5 is much less severe northbound than on the southbound route. You'll save an immense amount of time staying on I-5 the entire way.

For anybody planning to drive between Northern and Southern California, it will be best to take U.S. 101 rather than I-5 until things clear up.Budget about 1 hour 15 minutes in extra travel time over a regular drive down I-5, but it'll still be much faster than taking I-5 and then getting detoured over to the 58/14 routing.
