Just shopped and bought NYC to Oakland (OAK) tkts for April 30, 2024. Heads up that neither Momondo nor Kayak had a complete list of cheap flights. I sorted by Cheapest. 4. Re: Beware: book flight through Kayak. Kayak is a search engine, you booked through one of the many third party agents who use their site. As others have said, book directly with the airline and don't complicate the issue by booking with some shonky agent, it's no cheaper and as you have found out to your cost.

Kayak is my go to website for researching prices for flights, car rentals and hotel comparisons. Three years ago, Kayak sourced airfare via Expedia for British Airways/Alaska Air to Italy that saved a few hundred dollars. I could not get the same combination through the Airline website.
2. Re: buying a ticket through kayak. Kayak is more like a search engine for flights and while they now have arrangements to book via kayak the actual booking is done via another 3rd party. Honestly I would search for the same route on kayak google flights or skyscanner and then book with the airline directly.

Kayak will advertise fares from anybody prepared to pay them and not all 3rd parties will show the up to date fare - you are right to be wary of the likes of Kiwi. I may use Kayak to search airline and route options but never for booking purposes.
