9 years ago. I am mapping out a massive USA Road Trip and had my route drive times on the website: roadtrippers.com. A couple times seems 'long' to me so I went to google maps & all times were significantly shorter (yippee!). Went to mapquest.com & times were similar to Google Maps BU each leg of trip was 15-30 minutes longer on mapquest.
I’ve found Google Maps to be very reliable in France. The “offline” feature works really well if you don’t have data coverage. I don’t drive in France myself but I spend a lot of time in the passenger seat beside a professional who does, and his go-to app is Google plus a paper Michelin atlas.
After a few decompression days in Auckland, I will be renting a car for the driving portion of the trip. Is google maps a reliable source for roads or is there something better. I have a National Geographic road map but it is a year or two old and being a solo driver, I can't look at it while driving. Major routes would be: Auckland to Paihai

Re: Accuracy of Google maps. I can't speak definitively, but on the routes with which I have some familiarity, I'd say Google is generally pretty close. Of course urban traffic can be a BIG variable, as can road construction etc., but I think it's reliable enough. 2.
Google maps works well if you: 1. Download and save the areas where you will be driving, 2. Always (ALWAYS) check where you will be going before starting your trip, so you have a good idea of the itinerary…this will avoid all those “getting to the wrong town”, or “going through an orchard” problems. 3.
