Save. I have a hard time using Google map in Japanespecially pointing by direction East, West, North and South. I don't know which direction I am. This makes me walking out of blue dotted line and blue arrow is not pointing on the dotted blue line. Google map can't provide street name.I just end up asking the stranger.
Extremely accurate and reliable. I rented a pocket Wifi in Japan (very fast, unlimited data throughout Japan for about $75 for 10 days) and used my iPhone and google maps to get around. I was able to find my way around Tokyo, Kobe, Osaka, and even in Kochi on Shikoku Island. I could find shops and restaurants, etc., by name without problem.
1 year ago. Google maps cannot be downloaded outside of Japan. The reason for not being able to download offline maps of Japan on Google Maps is because Zenrin Co. (a Japanese mapping company) own the rights to the entire Japan cartographic area, and unlike most other countries, won't give it up to Google Maps for offline use.
I've never used Navitime. I always use Google Map, although in Japanese. I assume that Google Maps can locate most well-known sites listed in guidebooks perfectly in Kyoto; as for individual shops and restaurants, if searched in English, it might have errors sometimes. I am getting comfortable with the idea that I will be frequently lost on my trip to Japan and while locals are friendly my likelihood of getting accurate directions help in English seems low. So I plan on having a phone to use for navigation.

6 years ago. It is easy enough to use Google maps in Japan. But much better is to grab a variety of maps when you land at any international airport and at the tourism office of every main train station. They include some fun ads, too. I like paper maps.
