You can ask it to show you anything from natural parks to abandoned buildings, and add things you find interesting to your "bucket list".
If I put in a test journey from my hotel to another place the app would tell me to walk to a different tram stop and get a different number tram than what google maps said. It seemed the journeys shown by google maps are quicker/require less walking etc. I will use google maps for route planning and the app for buying tickets.
in google maps to get it to show the short or different route when the roads are closed for the winter you need to change the Depart Date to once it opens in the summer months and only use 2 destionations for that short route then pick it up on both sides.
I have found that guidebooks are useful in this area - planning. I like the 'Insight Guides' for the visuals - the maps are good for getting an overview of where things are and the photos w/information are numbered on the map. Kodansha's Gateway to Japan follows train lines, which is useful, though I think you can only get a used copy now.
