Re: Best handheld gps for walking in cities. 9 years ago. Locus Map Pro works brilliantly offline; it's available for Android (only). As mentioned above, just pre-load maps at home or via hotel WiFi before setting out, whatever app you choose to use.

Maybe not in Toronto but in many European cities you'll notice Google gives walking directions that are very different then driving. They have to deal with pedestrian only zones and other short cuts.
Google Map France can also be downloaded for offline use. You just won't get live traffic. Map use doesn't consume a ton of data anyway. I have an old but still kicking Garmin as well. I still use it when I drive in foreign countries. I then use Google Map as a back-up, primarily for searches.

31. Re: Google maps-offline walking directions? 5 years ago. Using the walk mode is very difficult in Italy. It can be done, but is very frustrating. It will not notify you if you walk off the path. No "recalculating" mode, you just walk off the map until you discover that you are going the wrong way.
