Maybe not in Toronto but in many European cities you'll notice Google gives walking directions that are very different then driving. They have to deal with pedestrian only zones and other short cuts.
Google Map France can also be downloaded for offline use. You just won't get live traffic. Map use doesn't consume a ton of data anyway. I have an old but still kicking Garmin as well. I still use it when I drive in foreign countries. I then use Google Map as a back-up, primarily for searches.

The trouble we ran into was that Google maps for iphone had not added "my places" yet so we needed to download another app to import "my places" into the iphone (the app was called My Places). It didn't work, it showed every mark as the same, used none of my icons, and I was unable to get it to tell me my current location.
12 years ago. I think Rome2Go is the top rated app. I got it for our upcoming trip and it looks awesome. Plus, it's an offline app so once you download it no worries about Internet or WiFi.
