    What kind of maps are you looking at where "distances are always misleading????" You can get exact walking routes, mileage and est. time from point to point on Google maps. We have few bookstores, but Kramerbooks & Second Story Books are both in Dupont Circle. Politics and Prose is great. Circulator bus is a good option for travel above ground.

I just looked at the NG map provided by Darrell - its route means missing the Korean Veterans, MLK and FDR Memorials. Just jump on google maps and have a look at where they are and you'll see the inherent logic in an easy walk.
