If you are not a member, or you have rented from Avis via a third party (Hotwire, Expedia, etc.) then none of it applies.
But Avis has some nice special deals. I read that Avis Preferred is a similar program to Alamo Skip the Counter where you can avoid the lines if you join this free program and check-in online before the trip. Does it work well in LAX during the busy time? I see a lot of reviews of Avis at LAX where people complain about 1-hour wait.

Most of the time with Avis Preferred there will be a board with names on it, if your name is there with a stall numbers, you just go to the stall, check out your car for damage, get in, go to the exit and give them your license and paperwork and you are on your way.

Don G. 2 posts. Avis Preferred membership. 6 years ago. I want to avoid the lines at the denver airport car rental counters and I thought I would join the avis preferred program. I was told by avis that if I am renting a car from avis for the first time I will still have to stop by the counter.
The US car rental business can be awfully sleazy. If you deal with a counter agent at pretty much any US car rental company, they'll try to upsell you to a more expensive car or trick you into accepting unnecessary insurance or a fuel service option.
