The reason to prepay a rental is that it is rather cheaper to do it that way, not to negate them authorising a deposit on your card for security. If you return a rental car without a full tank then yes you will be stung, around €150 seems the rate at the moment.

   So 3 days of our rental we were not able to use the car and had to spend $250 of out of pocket on repairs just to get it back to NYC. Upon return they seemed to resolve the issue. they apologized and offered us a -50% discount on the rental fee. We felt satisfied I was impressed they went that far without us even needing to argue.
