Hi! I'm curious about the driving conditions/snow in Montana end of March/early April. We will have two weeks for travel. Wondering of most highways and even some state roads will be clear that time of year. Current route we're thinking about: Missoula to Butte. Butte to Big Sky & Bozeman. Bozeman to West Yellowstone (a few days around Yellowstone)

Heading north from West Yellowstone takes you along US-191 towards Bozeman, MT. On this 75 mile trip you'll pass through the scenic Gallatin Canyon and go through the Big Sky area. This is a very scenic drive and for a while actually passes through the edge of Yellowstone National Park for a bit. The road has just enough twist to make it ...

    1. Re: Driving Bozeman to Big Sky in January. Sep 14, 2023, 8:49 PM. Yes, the road is well maintained and a lot of safety improvements have been made over the last 15 years. It a major route for skiers to Big Sky, and snowmobilers to West Yellowstone. However, it is a winding route in a narrow canyon at times that follows the Gallatin River ...

Jul 2020 • Couples. Highway 191 south out of Bozeman will take you through a narrow canyon, with the road hugging the beautiful Gallatin River all the way to Big Sky - about 50 miles. Dramatic cliffs hem in the road in certain pinch points making more of an impression. Plenty of turnouts along the way. Great drive.

Both Hwy 89 and Hwy 191 are also well-maintained by the Montana DOT, but like any road in Montana, if there is an active snowstorm the road can get slick. When Hwy 191 goes through the Gallatin Canyon by Big Sky it get can real icy in the winter because its a very shaded area. Give yourself plenty of time to drive to the places you want to go to.

Re: Drive from Bozeman to Helena. I've driven 287 many times to get up to Helena. From Bozeman, it's 98 miles to Helena via I90/hwy 287. If you go via I90/I15, it's 115 miles. The only benefit of going I90/I15 is it's interstate the entire way. Hwy 287 is 2-lane, but has multiple passing lanes on it. If you take Hwy 287, be sure to look for the ...

The drive from Bozeman to West Yellowstone was scary in a big rainstorm. I'd want to make very sure the weather, and roads, were good before making the drive in winter. And you should not drive it in the dark, due to risk of animals on the road. Sunrise will be around 8:00 and sunset at 4:45 or so.

  9. Determining best route to Glacier from Bozeman - Tripadvisor

    1. Re: Determining best route to Glacier from Bozeman. 7 years ago. Going from Yellowstone to Glacier is a pretty long drive. 7-8 hours. If your staying at Canyon you have to add the time for leaving the park so another 1.5 hours. Going to the far side and going over the GTSR is not something I would add to that drive.
