Horry County Schools (HCS) is a public school district serving Horry County, South Carolina, and is the third-largest school district in South Carolina. It serves over 45,000 students (as of the 2018–19 school year) in 56 schools (as well as offering additional education programs). The district office is located in Conway, South Carolina .
Horry County (pronounced OR-ree) was created from Georgetown District in 1801. At this time, the county had an estimated population of 550. Isolated by the many rivers and swamps typical of the South Carolina Lowcountry, the area essentially was surrounded by water, forcing its inhabitants to survive without much assistance from the "outside world".

In Horry county ( Myrtle Beach) the week before Easter. About half the counties in the state are the week before and the other half the week after.

South Carolina Schools are not allowed to start until after the 3rd Monday of August. This is due to MB "loosing" money when they started the first of the month. Most of the schools here seem to start that 3rd week. Edited: 12 years ago. Report inappropriate content.
