For example they will put $500 hold on your card, that means you must have $500 in the account, and it will be tie up that $500 until you return and clear the HOLD.

   Hi, I would strongly advise trying to get a credit card if it is possible for you. If you pay with a platinum or similar card for your flights and car hire you should get free holiday and car insurance, it will save you quite a bit , possibly $800 for a family and car insurance for a 2 week holiday.

The down side to this is that if you have a problem, you will have no way to dispute it like you would have with a credit card.
