It was early, around 11 am on a Monday (we did not pay for early check-in). By noon, we got a notification that our room was ready and had the electronic key on the phone.
If you will be checking a bag and want to pre-pay, you can do that any time prior to flying. When you check in at the kiosk, they will print out a baggage claim ticket for you, weigh your bag, and take care of it for you. Some airports do it right by the kiosk, other airports make you drag your suitcase to a different line.
I routinely check in on the computer and use the app. I also print out the passes just in case I lose my phone or something. The app works just fine. No idea what you've heard. A relatively small number of airports don't support it. I think all outside the EU. Did you buy both tickets together?
