I have rented a car with Budget at the airport. There are two types of insurances that are relevant I believe, and here is my understanding of them: Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), also called Loss Damage Waiver (LDW): This covers the actual car I rent for damage or theft. If I decline it, I'm responsible, or at least responsible for a large ...

The potential issue of immediate payment for damages is why I use a credit card with primary rental car coverage. Most credit cards offer secondary insurance and cover only after you show other insurance won't pay. AMEX offers primary for a small fee (under $30 for 30 days) and my Chase Sapphire Reserve offers it as part of the annual fee.

Hey guys, I am headed to PR in the coming weeks, I've already got everything book - including the car rental, was able to snag a deal with EZ Rent A Car, I have called GEICO and confirmed that my full coverage will be permitted with a car rental in PR and the rep told me not to buy insurance from the counter , they did mention loss of use is not covered (to which I can buy a supplemental ...

The rental car companies will have that on their cars to get them registered to begin with. But it will be the bare minimum. Then you have collision coverage for accidents as well as comprehensive for damage when you are not in the rental, (fire and theft, etc). You might consider, just using Uber.

I think we paid $45-50 per day. $35 a day for insurance does sound like a lot but add the actual car rental price (probably $15 or so) and it's quite reasonable. Even if my credit card or at home insurance company said they covered me in Mexico I would still buy the insurance at the car rental place. It's worth the extra few dollars.
