There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.

Iâve found Google Maps to be very reliable in France.The âofflineâ feature works really well if you donât have data coverage. I donât drive in France myself but I spend a lot of time in the passenger seat beside a professional who does, and his go-to app is Google plus a paper Michelin atlas.

Re: Using I-Phone Maps or google maps for driving directions? 2 years ago. We used to use maps.me but tried the google maps on our last 2 trips and prefer that. We were able to find our friend Janet's house in San Nic without having to stop and ask strangers, which we have never been able to do in 20 years ;)
