Re: Using voice and text in Japan. If you must use your own US number for voice/text in Japan, you must use a major provider that has roaming agreements in Japan. You can rent a SIM in Japan that has voice/text, but with a Japanese number. Or other prepaid roaming providers such as AIS from Thailand, 3 from Hong Kong, etc... with a foreign number.

Personally, lately (these 2-3 years) I have used only VoIP apps such as LINE to contact with my colleague, friends, and even my mother.
