A key point here is whether it's a 5:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. flight. In either case, traffic will not be a major factor. Your timing depends on where you are in Colorado Springs. I usually allow 90 minutes to drive. DO NOT take the E-470 toll road once you get up to Denver. It's enticing but it comes with a heavy price with a rental car.

If you weren't renting a car I would say it's very easy since you would take 470 (toll road) straight from Pena Blvd around greater Denver and onto I-25 south of Denver. If you want to be at the airport earlier, leave earlier. Without the toll road, take I-25 north to I-225 North to I-70 east to Pena Blvd. The distance from Colorado Springs to DIA is the same whether you go the toll road or not. I-25 N to E-470 N ~~ 1 hour 22 mins / 85.12 miles ~ I believe E-470 is a toll road. I-25 N to I-225 N ~~ 1 hour 24 mins / 83.30 miles.
fv gives you a really great scenic drive. However, if time does not allow, I really enjoy 83 through Parker. Nothing to stop and see, just a pretty drive.
