Some people try and ask them to correct it by claiming they have no middle name input text box, and JL does it for free.

The other is JAL operated by American Airlines. My understanding is that the first one is an AA aircraft with JAL service/crew while the latter is a JAL aircraft with AA service/crew.

You will need the record locator (known in airline speak as a PNR) that works in the American Airlines reservation system (the one you currently have is only valid for the JL system). It may be visible when you view the booking on the JL website.
