I guess I'll find out about the senior fare when we get on the bus and ask the driver. $1.50 is better than $3.00 but not a big deal. As for the cable car, at $8.00 a ride, I guess it is not really a viable means of transportation any more, just a tourist attraction. We have ridden it a couple of times on past trips.
With a Senior Clipper Card (which, as Charles C said, they will get for free), it is already coded as a SENIOR FARE card. So it automatically calculates the fare at senior rates. If they ride BART using their Senior Clipper Card, they will pay BART's Senior Clipper discount rate (heavily discounted - it's $3.40 from SFO to downtown SF).
We downloaded and filled out the form ahead of time, then got our cards after a short wait at the Transit Store at the Powell BART stop; there are eight kiosks at various BART stations. You can pay the clerk cash or use the credit card machines nearby to add fare before using.
