My flight at SFO arrives mid-afternoon, so I'm considering riding BART from SFO into downtown SF, but I'm not sure it's better than an Uber.

At the end of the journey, insert the ticket into the exit turnstile, and if there's no value left on it, the ticket will get 'eaten' by the machine and the gate will open.

When you get off the BART train, walk the same direction the train was going, and you will exit through the fare gate directly into the International Terminal (There is, technically, another exit, but it's up the escalator, where the Air Train runs), But since you won't need toe Air Train, just walk straight out into the terminal.
