Sometimes American Express works when both Visa and Master Card fail. Also, a pre-paid card works in some situations.
Open the AliPay app. 2. Click the second to last icon (My Mini-apps) 3. Click "Tourcard". 4. Follow the registration process. You'll be able top-up the card by using your credit/debit card (at least it works for me). Just keep in mind that every top-up incurs a 5% fee using the card.

This has nothing to do with air travel. You don't need one person with a large credit limit. You can each get a credit card with a lower limit to cover your portion. You can purchase a prepaid VISA card and pay with that and then have a card with a lower limit on which the hotel may place a hold. You can give the hotel cash as a hold.

They said the according to the US OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) they were no allowed to do business with Malta. Couldn't tell my why, though.
