Phonemic awareness is a part of phonological awareness in which listeners are able to hear, identify and manipulate phonemes, the smallest mental units of sound that help to differentiate units of meaning ( morphemes ). Separating the spoken word "cat" into three distinct phonemes, /k/, /æ/, and /t/, requires phonemic awareness.
Phonological awareness is technically only about sounds and students do not need to know the letters of the alphabet to be able to develop phonological awareness. Students in primary education sometimes learn phonological awareness in the context of literacy activities, particularly phonemic awareness.
Phonemic awareness and the resulting knowledge of spoken language is the most important determinant of a child's early reading success.
