You don’t need a rental car for DC area. With DCA…it has 2 terminals. Terminal 1 has southwest and frontier and air Canada.this is about a 10 min walk from terminal 2 ( main airport) With terminal 2 you have the airport . Then the arrivals/ departure road lanes. You could get lost quite a bit trying to find DCA and still spend less time than it would take to get to Dulles. Both sites are pretty well marked and as long as you can read the signs getting in and out is easy.
There is an AVIS rep at the airport. Just ask for him after getting your luggage. He is outside with a list of expected reservations. AVIS does not have an inside counter area. The shuttle runs every twenty or so minutes and brings you to the office nearby. I use AVIS regularly from SJO.
If you want to greet your daughters inside the terminal, then you are correct -- you should park in the "Short Term" lot for Terminal 2 -- just follow those signs as you're driving into the terminal. Here's the link for that -- also shows the rates:

Our flight comes in at 11pm so we are hoping to rent a car at the airport (one less stop on the way home). I have heard there is an AVIS in the airport that is open 24 hrs. Are there other companies on site as well.
6. Re: Best Car Rental at San (San Diego Airport. 9 years ago. Hertz and Avis are a step above any of the others and are consistently rated that way. As mentioned above join Hertz Gold and Avis preferred to skip having to speak with anyone other than the guard at the exit.
