9 years ago. I am mapping out a massive USA Road Trip and had my route drive times on the website: roadtrippers.com. A couple times seems 'long' to me so I went to google maps & all times were significantly shorter (yippee!). Went to mapquest.com & times were similar to Google Maps BU each leg of trip was 15-30 minutes longer on mapquest.
Google Maps is fine, but you do need to get the spelling of the place names right or it might send you somewhere completely different ! Just remember that it only attempts to give drive times & cannot include rest /photo/toilet/coffee stops. We do recommend a driver reviver every 2hr so if GM says 5hr, expect to take more than 6 hr.
Google Map France can also be downloaded for offline use. You just won't get live traffic. Map use doesn't consume a ton of data anyway. I have an old but still kicking Garmin as well. I still use it when I drive in foreign countries. I then use Google Map as a back-up, primarily for searches.

GoogleMaps is far ahead of Mapquest these days. Mapquest was first, but it has been playing a futile attempt at catch-up since GoogleMaps came on the scene. Having said that, " Vegas to Anaheim then LA around the LA area then to palm springs and back to LAX" is not going to challenge any mapping engine. But, I do have a question.
