As far as I can tell, Waze, Google, Mapquest, and many others have eliminated the ability to map driving directions using the shortest driving miles rather than driving time. Since, I never drive fast and hate patronizing interstates as much as root canal surgery, is there any free way to determine the shortest driving miles for a roadtrip?

In my experience, one needs to double (or triple!) check all routes given on Google Maps, MapsOnUs, MapQuest, etc. When such a great area of vast New Mexico is "in the boonies," the last thing you need is to get off on questionable roads that criss-cross "mini-boonies" within the larger "boonies!"

    10. Re: Map to avoid scary mountain roads. At the risk of my father cringing in his grave because he was instrumental in the design and construction of the interstate highway system back in the day, stick to the boring, designed for safety, interstate highway system. That route would be I 25 south to I 40 west.

Closer to Estes Park, Lily Lake is on your left. This short trail around the lake is stoller and toddler friendly. Just driving time for this route is between 3 and 3 1/2 hours. Another option but with more driving time, do a mapquest search using Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, Conifer, Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Nederland and Estes Park ...
