I still use paper maps . . . and carry a compass from a 100-yen store. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) publishes tourist maps for Tokyo and Kyoto; you can request free copies from the JNTO website. These are good street maps. In addition, the Subway & Bus Navi map of Kyoto shows how to get to tourist spots on public transportation.
6 years ago. It is easy enough to use Google maps in Japan. But much better is to grab a variety of maps when you land at any international airport and at the tourism office of every main train station. They include some fun ads, too. I like paper maps.
