The only reasons I used Hotels.com was because of it's rewards (book 10 nights, get a free one) and because it was somewhat easy to use (it the website/app worked). However, I can't imagine this rewards program staying, so I am searching for other options.
Yes, it says stuff about that in the Terms and Conditions of the coupon and the Rewards night program. I also see it towards the bottom of any % discount coupon email they send out. It mentions that using it won’t count towards your rewards night activity. Sounds like you hadn’t realised as you might not have read the T and C.
The "free nights" associated with travel programs are perishable. In the future use the nights as you accumulate the nights. At best incompetence on the part of Hotels dot com. Feel free to waste more time pursuing the one free night. Hard to imagine the free nights are of value regardless. The average hotel room is $100-$200.
Still there is no singular answer to which is best, but from the ones you’ve listed, Marriott and IHG would probably suit you best.
