The phone number given sounded disconnected, although it may just have been so jammed there was not even a waiting time. I went on the internet and found another number for the airline. I got through to that number after about a 5/10 minute wait and managed to change my flights. It may be worth trying to find an alternative number for your airline.

From the travelocity.com website, under "Support - Customer Support - Contact Us", a phone number of 1-855-863-9601 is listed. They also have a Callback button you can click. You enter your name, itinerary number, and phone number and they will call you back. They list the wait time.

Since the flight is operated by Lufthansa you can't choose the seats on the United Website. You are redirected to the Lufthansa website. on the LH.com website you find a note : "Conditions of your ticket do not allow for seat reservations on LH.com. Please contact our service center at: 1-800-645-3880 or select seats during check-in."
Re: Renewing Passport (number) after booking a flight. I'm a bit confused by your post. But yes, you can go online and change your passport number after you book a ticket. This is easier if you have an account created with the airline you're traveling (and you will earn miles). You can also call the airline.
The airlines do not really care if you show up for your flight or not. You've paid, they have your money whether you fly or not, and if you don't fly, may be able to sell that flight to someone else. As long as you do not intend to try to use the 2nd part of the ticket (the return portion), you're fine with just not showing up.
I booked a flight with American Airlines from BCN to JFK and I just saw that i provided my date of birth incorrectly. (wrong month only). I called them, and they said it is changed now. Few hours after, i checked on the internet, but my flight appeared still with the wrong date of birth.
