Horrible Experience With Avis San Jose Del Cabo - Beware. This was by far the worst car rental experience ever! I am an Avis Preferred member and have been for many years. I thought using Avis because of my status and because it is US based that this was the best and safest option for my family. Was I ever wrong.
I have rented with Avis, Hertz and Budget out of the Mexico City Airport. I can tell you it is a very different experience than renting a car in North America. It takes a long time before you can drive the car out of the parking lot. By far Avis is the best, however it is also the most expensive but you get what you pay for.
1- The van was 30 minutes late to the airport to take us to their office. 2- I had reserved at 375.00 for a 6 day rental. Once you get to their office the try hitting you up for an additional 75.00 a day for insurance. If you decline insurance they will block your CC for 3,000 dollars. That’s right 3,000.00 USD. I will never ever rent again ...
I booked a car to my vacation thru travel agent, paid in full the amount of $219.78 including taxes and insurance. At the airport for pick up the Avis's agent Angelo makes me agree with a extra insurance stating that my insurance only covers 80% and Mexico is dangerous, violent, lots of vandalism, broken windows, car crash, bed roads, crazy divers.
I have used Avis one time, but from my Cabo hotel for a one day rental. I have not used Avis at the airport. Note that these are franchises and do not have the same 'connection' as name-brand rentals in the US. I have used Alamo many times and have not had any issues. Both AMC/Ventur and Cactus are well regarded by regulars on this forum.
